What do people with COPD think their lungs look like? Ideas about what is going on inside the body can influence how people present their symptoms and respond to medical treatment. In this study, anthropologist Megan Wainwright asked people with COPD to draw their lungs and then explain their pictures. She discovered that they were very influenced by the imagery and language used by healthcare professionals to describe their particular illness, but often in a pessimistic way. Therefore, Megan suggests that using drawing during pulmonary rehabilitation could be a useful way to identify and address unhelpful beliefs.
