Breathing and Breathlessness in Clinic and Culture

Our PIs, Jane Macnaughton and Havi Carel have contributed a chapter on breathing and breathlessness to a new book, ‘The Edinburgh Companion to the Critical Medical Humanities’, in which expert contributors from around the world map out the field of the critical medical humanities. It comprehensively introduces the ways in which interdisciplinary thinking across the humanities and social sciences might contribute to, critique and develop medical understanding of the human individually and collectively.

Jane and Havi’s chapter uses breathing, and the symptom of breathlessness, to explore how a critical medical humanities approach might bridge the gap between clinical understanding and both broad cultural knowledge and personal experience.
